Past Accomplishments: No Discharge Zone
|
No-Discharge Zone for Peconic BaysAs of June 2002, the US Environmental Protection Agency has officially placed into law the No-Discharge Zone petition prepared on behalf of the East End Towns and Villages by Peconic Baykeeper and New York Department of State. The cumulative effect of the discharge of raw and partially treated sewage poses a serious threat to the surrounding marine environment, especially in shallow, poorly flushed bodies of water. These wastes often contain microbial pathogens and chemical additives such as formaldehyde, phenols and chlorine that can impair water quality and threaten marine life. This declaration of the Peconic Estuary as a No-Discharge Zone is a significant step in protecting the estuarine environment of the North and South Forks for now and the future. To comply with the law, type III facilities, such as an on-board holding tank with a y-valve, must be locked at all times, except when emptying into designated pump-out tanks. Types I and II marine heads must have closed y-valves or seacocks, and a permanent lock or other fastening device. Pumpout stations are available at most marinas around the bay. The three year campaign is a prime example of how dedication, hard work and community participation can bring about change for the better. Read a Newsday article about this! Safe boating and remember, pump it out!
