Other InitiativesState Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (SPDES) Through public access as provided by the Freedom of Information Act, Peconic Baykeeper has initiated a comprehensive review permit review of numerous discharges that exist from the Nassau-Queens County Line east along the South Shore to ensure compliance with the Federal Clean Water Act. Stormwater Management Peconic Baykeeper is partnering with the Town of Riverhead and AbTech Industries to put a new drain filtration system in place in many of the town's storm drains in the coming months. AbTech has developed an innovative and cost-effective filtration system to fit within existing storm drains. In the Town of Riverhead there is great potential for this project to improve water quality in the Peconic River. Nonpoint source water pollution, primarily stormwater runoff, is the greatest threat facing our waters today and has a direct impact on water quality, public health and the vitality of our aquatic resources. Despite existing technology to help clean and filter stormwater runoff, there has been a lack of implementation on Long Island. We hope that this project will be the start of many successful partnerships with municipalities along the Peconic and South Shore Estuaries.
